This summer, The Belfry will provide the backdrop for a golfing tournament not quite like any other – ICONS of Football 2017.
Part of the wider ICONS Series, the competition will see 24 of the beautiful game’s greats take on each other in a Ryder-Cup-style tournament of four rounds; the foursomes, fourballs and singles and the incredibly exciting £1million-Swing – where hitting a hole-in-one on the infamous 18th will earn the winner a cool seven figures for their chosen charity (and any fan who guesses that lucky Icon will also win themselves a large monetary sum).
The 24 participants are split into two teams, captained by Ryder Cup heroes Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke. Westwood will lead an all-England team, whilst Northern Irishman Clarke will head up the Rest of the World. But who’s taking part on July 23rd? Here’s a rundown on the footballing greats representing the Rest of the World…
Gabriel Batistuta (5)
The ROTW star Clarke’s most excited to work with an understandably so; Argentine goal machine Gabriel Batistuta, famed for his exploits at the 1998 World Cup, will be hoping his strike-rate on the golf field is as strong as it is on the football pitch.
Patrik Berger (5)
An icon at Anfield and a real magician with the ball, but can Patrik Berger replicate his sorcery in another sport? A handicap of just five suggests the Liverpool favourite’s got something about him, and Berger certainly won’t settle for second-best – winning an FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup during his successful stint on Merseyside.
Ronald de Boer (10)
Very much the epitome of Dutch football, Ronald de Boer was a versatile, technical and tactically adept player who plied his trade with Barcelona and represented the Netherlands on 67 occasions. Often accompanied by brother Frank for much of his career, this could be the 46-year-old’s time to shine.
Ryan Giggs (12)
Seen by many as the greatest player in Premier League history, Ryan Giggs won a staggering 13 titles with Manchester United and scored in all but one of his 24 top flight campaigns. A handicap of 12 suggests he hasn’t spent as much time on the greens recently as he has on the training pitch, but the Welsh legend’s determination is undoubted and he’ll provide vital leadership in the dressing room.
Pep Guardiola (10)
One of the most fascinating tactical minds the Premier League has ever witnessed, can Pep Guardiola unleash his phenomenal ethos onto the world of golf? Before Guardiola was a world-class manager he was a pretty handy player too, so we’re expecting to see plenty of technique in his golf swing. His passion for Golf is equal to that of football for the Catalonian.
Dirk Kuyt (10)
A true cult figure at Anfield, Dirk Kuyt could be the unsung hero for this Rest of the World side, providing the energy and grit to keep the rest of the team driving on. A clinical finisher on his day, too, Clarke will be hoping Kuyt can bring that touch to the putting green.
Peter Schmeichel (10)
Peter Schmeichel’s approach to goalkeeping was revolutionary and Clarke will hope he brings similar innovation to the Rest of the World squad. Measuring in at 6 foot 3 and always boasting a powerful frame, the Danish legend could have a huge impact when teeing off – and will fancy his chances on the £1million swing.
Andriy Shevchenko (1)
With the best handicap of any player involved in the tournament, Andriy Shevchenko could well steal the show at The Belfry. His proficiency on the golf field shouldn’t come as a surprise; the Ukrainian international was one of the most clinical finishers in the world during his playing days, helping AC Milan to Serie A and Champions League titles with 175 goals in 322 appearances.
Nemanja Vidic (6)
One of the meanest defenders in Manchester United’s recent history, in addition to an impressive handicap of just six, Nemanja Vidic will bring nastiness, grit and leadership to the Rest of the World team.
Dwight Yorke (3)
Perhaps one of Manchester United’s most underrated greats, Dwight Yorke split apart Premier League defences on a weekly basis before proving himself equally effective in midfield for Birmingham and Sunderland. A fine physical specimen, Yorke’s natural athleticism and golfing ability for golf could give the Rest of the World a cutting edge over England.
Alessandro Del Piero (10)
Bringing real class to the Rest of the World team is iconic No.10 Alessandro Del Piero, a Juventus and Italy legend widely viewed as one of the greatest of his generation. Having continued his career into his early 40s, plying his trade in Australia and India, the Azzurri great’s appetite for victory has never waned – he’ll be eager to bring that to the golf course.
