Liverpool are all set to face Everton this afternoon.
The third round FA Cup tie arrives on the back of a relentless month of fixtures for the title-chasing Reds, and it would be no surprise to see Jurgen Klopp take advantage of an opportunity to rest a handful of his key first team players.
That is a suggestion backed up by The Athletic’s James Pearce, who suggested the 52-year-old boss could ring the changes for the Merseyside derby: “I can certainly see 7 or 8 changes but could be more.”
With that knowledge in mind, FFC have predicted Klopp will make seven changes to the side that beat Sheffield United 2-0 earlier this week.
The headline inclusion is undoubtedly Takumi Minamino.
The Japan international completed his transfer on New Year’s Day and was ineligible for the clash against the Blades, so he will naturally be hoping to make his first start in the derby.
Elsewhere we expect Klopp will hand opportunities to a handful of fringe players, including Adrian, Adam Lallana and Divock Origi.
All three players are experienced enough to thrive on the day and they may need to help a handful of youth players cope with the magnitude of the occasion.
It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?
Neco Williams, a player who played the full 90 minutes against Arsenal in the EFL Cup earlier this season and provided the assist for Origi’s last-gasp equaliser, could step in to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Sepp van den Berg also played the full 90 against the Gunners and could return to the XI alongside his compatriot Virgil van Dijk, while Andrew Robertson keeps his place at left-back to provide width on the overlap for the right-footed Minamino.
In the absence of Naby Keita, Fabinho and Alex Oxalde-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones could be handed a rare start in midfield to allow Georginio Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson an opportunity to rest up.
