Looking at Chelsea, it is not hard to identify who the main man of Maurizio Sarri’s squad is.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Lille back in 2012, Eden Hazard has been world-class and has go on to earn the status of MVP at the west London club.
Game after game, the brilliant Belgian often comes in for so much praise from supporters and pundits alike, though he is not the only Chelsea player spectators enjoy watching.
As well as Hazard, Willian is also another individual who wins much acclaim after the final whistle of matches with some such as former West Ham striker Dean Ashton even suggesting the Brazilian is the most important figure in the Chelsea team (via talkSPORT).
Ashton, however, could not have been more wrong. After all, Willian, an attacking midfielder, is a player who can barely score more than five league goals in an entire season.
In Chelsea’s 2014/15 Premier League title-winning campaign, the 30-year-old was only able to score two goals in 36 appearances, while the following term his tally rose but just three more.
To put things into perspective, that was just one more than what Eden Hazard managed in a season described as the worst of his career.
In Willian’s defence, under Jose Mourinho, he was probably given less freedom than Hazard while he also endured a difficult relationship with Antonio Conte who often left him on the bench.
That, however, does not change the fact that when Willian is presented with a good opportunity to score or play a team-mate in, he tends to waste it.
With all of that in mind, Chelsea should have definitely sold him to either one of Barcelona or Manchester United in the summer and brought in a new, more productive forward. A forward capable of easing Hazard’s goal-scoring burden.
All things considered, Willian might just be the most overrated player in the Premier League. For all of the praise he receives from those with voices in the media, he produces very little.
