A few weeks ago, The Mirror reported that then-Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was planning to swoop for in-form West Ham United striker Marko Arnautovic in the upcoming January transfer window.
Since then, though, the Red Devils have parted ways with the Portuguese coach, meaning that the Hammers ought to be able to breathe a sigh of relief.
What’s the story?
Mourinho has departed Old Trafford, leaving United in sixth place in the Premier League table and 19 points behind leaders Liverpool. The club have announced that former United forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will take charge of the club on a caretaker basis until the end of the season.
Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below...
This is good news for the Irons, as Solskjaer, nor any subsequent United bosses, are likely to revive Mourinho’s interest in the 77-cap Austria international.
A perfect Mourinho man
Arnautovic has been in fine form for Manuel Pellegrini’s side so far this season, racking up five goals and two assists in thirteen league outings. His role in the build-up play is also vital to the Hammers, as well as his end product.
The 29-year-old also bears all the hallmarks of an ideal Mourinho signing. Arnautovic stands tall, at 6’4”, and is also a very powerful, strong and energetic figure. He also has plenty of experience and bags of attitude and self-belief.
He is unlikely to be so suitable for the approach of future United managers though.
Were Mourinho still in charge at United, West Ham fans could have legitimate concerns about losing their No. 7 to the Red Devils. Now, though, it looks as though Arnautovic is set to remain at the London Stadium, which is a major boost for Pellegrini.
