Celtic’s long running search for a right-back appears to be close to a conclusion, according to reports from FussballTransfers.com.
What’s the word?
Celtic have been looking for competition to Mikael Lustig since last summer. Lustig and Cristian Gamboa, who are both out of contract in June, shared right-back duties until Tony Ralston emerged from cold storage just before Christmas.
Celtic have now turned their attention to Toljan, who has only featured in the Regionalliga West for Dortmund so far this season. Reports (Daily Mail via Daily Record) linked the 24-year-old with Celtic earlier this week and it now appears they are in pole position to offer him first team football.
Celtic seem to be closing in on a loan deal for the 6 foot defender, but according to FussballTransfers.com it won’t include a purchase option.
The missing piece
Signing Toljan looks like ending a long running search for a right-back but Celtic’s last Bundesliga signing failed spectacularly – Marvin Compper.
Celtic have been forced down the loan route during this transfer window which isn’t ideal but the priority is to secure the SPFL title with rebuilding put back until the summer.
Toljan will need some time to get match-fit but hopefully can be available in time for the Valencia matches on February 14th and 21st.
