Roberto’s attempted punch spinning into the back of his own net will likely be the defining image of West Ham United’s 3-0 loss against Burnley.
This was added to a long list of shockers that he has made since coming in for the injured Lukasz Fabianski, but it is not the moment that summarises the Hammers’ seven-game winless streak.

The epitome of their barren run took the form of Burnley’s second goal, for which the Spanish goalkeeper was accompanied in his confusion and calamity.
The 33-year-old’s throw was far from the greatest, or most advised, as he made a big loop with the ball to Fabian Balbuena, despite the fact he had Chris Wood and Dwight McNeil in fairly close proximity.
Even so, the centre-back’s touch was shockingly bad, gifting the ball to McNeil who sprung forward and played it through for Wood to finish off.
It was a terrible sequence of play that felt eerily familiar.
Roberto has become a villainous figure due to how poor he has been and his form has prompted some to call for him to be replaced by David Martin, with Darren Bent among those to feel this way, as reported by Football Insider.
While he has arguably been central to the team’s issues, he is not the only reason behind them and there are other culprits at work here who are contributing to West Ham’s downfall.
Looking back at the Oxford United humiliation, there is the fact the Hammers couldn’t score once against League One opposition as well as the Arthur Masuaku slip and the fact they managed to ship four goals.
Then over to the league losses: Declan Rice giving away a penalty against Crystal Palace, Masuaku’s weak attempt at a tackle on Bernard in the box for Everton’s opener, Newcastle United being able to win two headers virtually unopposed for their first of the day.
Roberto should be switched out due to how poor he has been, but a new goalkeeper is not going to fix West Ham’s problems.
Indeed, Pellegrini’s problems run much deeper and his recent woes should not mask the broader picture.
