Towards the start of the last decade, Rangers found themselves in severe trouble. Financial difficulties took them out of the Scottish Premiership and towards the murky depths of the pyramid north of the border. This decade hasn’t started in the same fashion but it’s still difficult times for the Glaswegian outfit.Steven Gerrard’s men have already failed to win six domestic matches in 2020 while their top scorer Alfredo Morelos is still without a goal this calendar year. Furthermore, the Gers are now 13 points off Celtic in the race for the title.Their hopes of stopping their Old Firm rivals from achieving a ninth successive league crown looks very slim, especially after suffering defeat against Hamilton on Wednesday evening.Whether it’s Gerrard’s fault or the effort of the players, one man who hasn’t covered himself in glory is Dave King. The Rangers owner is beginning to look rather foolish at the moment, mainly for giving the manager a new contract in December. However, it’s remarks he made almost a year ago that have seen him dig his own grave at Ibrox.Speaking about the club, he went as far as to say the Light Blues were on the verge of becoming a dominant force again last April.Rangers may have achieved their highest points tally since returning to the SPFL last term but the gap between them and Celtic now suggests they are certainly not within tangible reach of challenging.Defeat against Hamilton shows as much, as does their inability to defend basic situations. James Tavernier was at fault against Hearts last weekend while Connor Goldson was the victim on Wednesday evening. It’s enough to question the player’s mentality, and indeed that’s something Gerrard has done on multiple occasions this season. After Saturday’s defeat, he said: “Me and my staff have given these players absolutely everything for 20 months and held their hand on and off the pitch and improved everything but it is tough when with every other performance you feel the way I feel.”It was a strong message to his players of where they were at, but it wasn’t the first time Gerrard has done so in recent months. For away day veterans only: Can you name all of these defunct stadiums? After defeat versus Kilmarnock last month the 39-year-old commented: “I thought we had the mentality and the characters to sustain a push but on the evidence of the last four-five weeks I’m getting proven wrong.”This is rather ironic considering King specifically mentioned Gerrard’s winning mentality in April 2019. That seemed to be a key factor in appointing the Liverpudlian but it’s fair to say it hasn’t entirely gone to plan. The very fact King’s comments have backfired so spectacularly is evidence of Rangers’ downfall over the last three months and proves they have a lot of work to do to close the gap.Celtic are certainly not within tangible reach.Meanwhile, King and Wilson’s 2019 decision is now proving to be rather baffling…
